Galway City Council delegation celebrates 50 years of twinning with Lorient

A delegation led by Galway City Council has returned from a successful three-day visit to Lorient, France marking the 50thanniversary of the Galway-Lorient Twinning. The milestone visit which took place from 20-23 March 2025 reinforced the strong cultural, economic, and maritime ties between the two cities, highlighting their shared commitment to sustainability, education, and innovation.

Back in the day, town twinnings were a great fashion altogether. Every little town and village had some fella living down the road, probably in on a witness protection programme or someone who said he hailed from some little Breton village named Creton-LeBlanque or Moron du Ville. And in a time when there was really nothing on the telly and it rained for eight months of the year, the temptation for a jolly to an exotic destination (anything east of Moate) was too much to resist.

Galway unlikely to develop sister city agreement with Santa Monica

A city council spokesperson says Galway will unfortunately not be in a position to develop any sister city agreements in the forseeable future, despite the wishes of a Santa Monica public representative.
