John Byrne was the clear winner of the Maugherow 10k on Sunday in 33.33. The race was run over a picturesque figure of eight course on the north Sligo coast, from the local church to the causeway with a tough second half and an uphill finish. Lucy Brennan (Sligo AC) was first woman in 38.08, less than two weeks after her victory in the Cork Marathon. Mayo AC's Andrew Lynskey was third in 36.34. Tom Hunt 40.36, PJ Hall 42.25, Ann Murray 45.07, Christy O'Malley 46.05, Sarah Syron 48.50 all had good workouts on a humid afternoon. Other finishers included Breege Staunton and Fit4Life participants Chris Clarke, Clare Walshe from Claremorris, and Michelle Reynolds from Ballina.

IWAK chief calls for Government assessment of all regional airports

Chairman of Ireland West Airport Liam Scollan has hit out at proposals in the McCarthy Report which he says fails to put the spotlight on the considerable level of State largesse provided to the State’s own regional airports, Cork and Shannon, and focuses instead on the much less significant funding interventions made to the so-called “regional airports” (Waterford, Kerry, Galway, IWA Knock, Sligo and Donegal).

IWAK chief calls for Government assessment of all regional airports in light of McCarthy proposals

Mr Scollan has also argued that the report supports the status quo which sees the State airports cushioned by taxpayer handouts and by imposed levy payments from competing independent airports, thereby ensuring that an inefficient, inequitable and ultimately taxpayer-supported aviation system will continue.

Look to the future with hope

I took a piece of my own advice last weekend. I was in Birmingham and Liverpool for a short break, the purpose of which was to watch the Liverpool v Arsenal game. The less said about that the better. There didn’t seem to be much sign of a recession in those two thriving cities. That’s from an outsider’s point of view anyway.

New route for IWAK following Ryanair-Shannon Airport fallout

Ireland West Airport Knock has benefited from a fallout between Ryanair and Shannon Airport. Due to Shannon’s refusal of Ryanair’s offer to keep four aircraft based in Shannon, Ryanair decided to switch the popular Faro (Portugal) route from Shannon to Ireland West Airport. Shannon’s loss is Knock’s gain and the new route is a welcome addition to IWAK’s ever expanding selection of routes.
