Sprint Triathlon coming back to Castlebar in April

Liquid Motion Triathlon Club and G.M.I.T. Castlebar are delighted to announce the launch of Castlebar Sprint Distance Triathlon 2013 on Sunday, April 21. Over 150 athletes are expected to compete on the day, ranging from the experienced to the first time novice. Already some of the West’s leading triathletes have signed up to take part in the event including last year’s winners Ruairí Geraghty (Galway Triathlon Club) and Rachel Glendon (Wicklow Triathlon Club). The race itself will consist of a 750m swim (30 lengths) which is taking place at Castlebar Swimming Pool, a 20km cycle through the surrounding countryside and then back into Castlebar for the 5km run. For those new to the multi-disciplinary world of triathlon, a sprint distance race such as this offers a fantastic way to dip your toe, so whether you are an experienced triathlete looking for a personal best or you’re taking on your very first challenge, this event will provide the perfect setting for it.

Duathlon fever hits Castlebar tomorrow

Tomorrow, Saturday March 24, will see some 300 participants take part in the third annual Harlequin Adventure Duathlon. This is a mix of running and cycling over a hilly course. There is a slight change in the course this year with no off road section, reducing the course to 34.5km instead of the 38km of last year. For those who are taking part a standard racer will do perfectly for the bike sections and your normal runners will do for all of the running sections.

Doherty wins Harlequin Adventure Duathlon

Con Doherty from Westport put older and far more experienced athletes to the sword at the Harlequin Duathlon. Sixteen-year-old Con showed his running prowess when he obliterated the field with a blistering run up to the Booster station at Glenisland some 1,450 feet above sea level.
