Top of the table continues to heat up
By the time you read this Westport United could have joined Straide and Foxford United and Manulla at the top of the table on 16 points, or Castlebar Celtic could move just one point behind the two table toppers and just into third place over Westport United by a point. The two grand old clubs of Mayo soccer met in Celtic Park yesterday evening in one of the most eagerly anticipated clashes so far this season. Also in action last night were fifth placed Claremorris and a bottom of the table Ballina Town, a game Ballina really need to pick up some points in as they look to pull themselves away from the relegation battle.
Manulla look to push out their lead at the top
League leaders Manulla will look to keep up their impressive start to the new season tomorrow evening when they head to Belleek to take on a Ballina Town side that are rooted to the bottom of the table and badly in need of a win. Last weekend they left it late but ultimately saw off the challenge of a Straide and Foxford United side that had been level with them on the top of the table at the start of the weekend, thanks to a goal three minutes from time from the head of veteran striker Dessie Campbell.
First weekend packs plenty of surprises
Last weekend's big kick-off of the Mayo League saw plenty of surprises in the top division, with Glenhest, Manulla and and Straide and Foxford United all picking up the points against what was perceived as superior opponents, while a new look Ballyheane laid down a marker of intent with an impressive 5-1 win at home over league new boys Achill Rovers.
Soccer season kicks into life
This weekend sees the 2017 Mayo League soccer season kick off, with 34 different sides lined up for competition this season. In the top division all eyes will be fixed on seeing whether anyone can finally step up and stop Westport United's domination of the league. Last season Ballina Town gave it a right good go, but came up short down the home stretch with John Brennan's men edging them out down the home stretch.
