Carlow champions Mount Leinster Rangers have certainly done their bit to put Carlow hurling on the map having been deservedly crowned Leinster club champions last Sunday.

The waiting is nearly over and the final pieces of the jigsaw are now in place as St Brigid’s ready themselves for a titanic All-Ireland Club Football Final showdown with Dublin and Leinster club champions Ballymun Kickhams on St Patrick’s Day.

Last weekend saw no fewer than three Westmeath clubs in action in the Leinster club championship but unfortunately all three came up against better opposition and duly bowed out of contention.

New Galway senior and u-21 hurling manager Anthony Cunningham will have a busy January and February with his role with the Galway hurlers and his manager’s role with the Leinster club champions Garrycastle, who are in the All-Ireland semi-final against St Brigid’s.

All attention now turns to the Senior Championship and although Thomastown have installed themselves as favourites, Freshford will not relinquish their title without a fight. In last year’s decider Freshford halted Railyard’s search for a fifth championship in a row and will put up a royal battle to retain their title.

The final of the Brogmaker Ladies Football senior championship takes place this Sunday when Railyard and Freshford meet at Nowlan Park. Railyard are chasing a fifth title in a row while Freshford will be determined to halt the champion's dominance and stake their claim for the ladies senior title having claimed the junior crown in 2008.

Laura Scriven and Catherine Rudenko (both from St Laurence O'Toole AC) competed with distinction at the Leinster cross-country championships held in the picturesque grounds of Avondale house, Rathdrum, Wicklow on Sunday last. Laura finished in 4th place in the ladies novice race while Catherine was 12th. These girls were strongly supported by team-mates Pamela Donoghue, Kathleen Kinsella & Maria O'Rourke in the ladies race.

Whatever happens from here on in, 2008 has already been a memorable, indeed historic, year for both Castledaly and Maryland who were crowned Westmeath senior and intermediate champions respectively in the last few weeks.
