It’s very hard to describe a true Irishman, without acknowledging that we all share a complicated inheritance. At no time was that complication more powerfully amplified than in the crisis of identity leading up to and during War World I. On the one side is the unionist image of Irish Protestants loyally, and exclusively, rallying to the Union Jack, and sealing that union with their blood; while on the other side, the Catholic and nationalist men and women, the people of the 1916 Rising, who represent the ‘true’ Ireland, in sharp contrast to the misguided Irishmen slaughtered in France on the altar of British imperialism.

home ground

It has been a strange gardening year so far. In my garden at least, plants are beginning to flower that have already flowered earlier this year while some spring shrubs are only coming into flower now. I’m not complaining, though, as flowers at any time are welcome. Another thing that is very noticeable this year is the beautiful scents in my garden. Such a variety of perfumes from lilies, buddleias, etc. They really brighten my days.

One of the most colourful characters in the world of entertainment, Michael Flatley, is to visit the Royal Castlebar Theatre and Event Centre within the next couple of weeks. Unquestionably the most talented dancer of his generation, Michael is coming to Mayo to promote his Lord of the Dance show which starts at the Royal Castlebar on Saturday January 3. “I have heard great things about the venue in Castlebar and I know that I am going to be hugely impressed when I see the world-class new facility with my own eyes,” says Michael. “It’s a huge step forward for the people of Connacht as it means that elite shows and events such as ours can be brought to their doorstep. Prior to the opening of the new Royal Castlebar, it was just not an option for us to travel west of the Shannon.”

Remembering Mayo’s Fallen Heroes

The recent very sad and tragic death of a brave young Royal Marine Robert McKibben really brought home to everyone in the Westport area the stark reality of war. Robert’s parents, sisters, brother, his girlfriend, relations and friends were truly devastated, as were his comrades in arms from the Royal Marines and indeed his former comrades from the Irish Defence Force. All who knew him were deeply shocked and numbed by his death. It is fair to say that the whole region was saddened by the news of his tragic death and it was no surprise that St Mary’s Church in Westport was packed for the funeral, or that it brought the town of Westport to a standstill as the cortege moved through the town in what was one of the saddest funerals on record.
