The controversial Galway City Ring Road will be progressed under the new Fianna Fáil-Fine Gael-Green administration as the Programme for Government commits to existing projects in the National Development Plan.

Galway’s islands could be set to benefit from an initiative, the Interdepartmental Committee for Island Development, which would comprise representatives from Government departments and be chaired by Minister Seán Kyne.

It is “vital” the Western Rail Corridor be included as part of the Government’s Capital Plan, as developing rail is essential for connectivity, more balanced regional development, and in supporting more sustainable and lower environmental impact transport options.

Seán Kyne has been given a junior ministerial portfolio that takes him across two government departments, while Ciaran Cannon has been rescued from the backbenches, having also been appointed a Minister of State, under new Taoiseach Leo Varadkar.
