Culture Night, an event to celebrate the rich and diverse culture in Ireland, takes place tomorrow Friday, September 19, from 4pm.

Heritage Week 2025 kicks off nationwide on August 16, and Kylemore Abbey is celebrating this year’s theme, “Exploring Our Foundations”, by offering a week of onsite and online talks, guided nature walks, and live music.

Located in the heart of Connemara on the Wild Atlantic Way, Kylemore Abbey was originally built by Mitchell Henry as an ancestral castle in 1867. Later, after passing through the hands of the Duke and Duchess of Manchester, it became home to a Benedictine Community of Nuns who were fleeing war-torn Belgium. In 1920, it was transformed into the iconic Kylemore Abbey. The Estate continues to be a home and place of worship to the Benedictine Community, who celebrated their centenary year in Kylemore in 2020.

This week Kylemore Abbey saw the Blessing of its twentieth Abbess, Mother Karol O’Connell OSB.

Kylemore Abbey has an exciting line-up for Heritage Week next week, including the unveiling of a new display of the ceremonial parliamentary robes and coronet of the Duke of Manchester, a former owner of the abbey.

The Sisters of Mercy came to Galway on May 1 1840. They started, in extremely difficult circumstances, in Lombard Street with three postulants. The need for uncloistered sisters who would be free to go about the streets and visit the poor in home, hospital, and jail was very great at the time. They were out and about the day after their arrival. An epidemic of cholera had broken out and they helped to nurse the ill and alleviate distress. They quickly prospered to become “Reputedly the best institution that ever was in Galway”.
