An Taoiseach Enda Kenny presented a gift of a Harry Clarke printed canvas of the beautiful nativity window from St Patrick’s Church in Kilmaine, to His Holiness, Pope Francis, during a private audience at the Vatican on Monday. Schoolchildren making 'forty six mile return trip' to get to school

Schoolchildren in parts of south Mayo are making a 46 mile return trip to get to school each day, according to one local councillor. Ballinrobe based Fianna Fáil councillor Damien Ryan told the Mayo Advertiser this week: "In The Neale in one area, it was a mile trip to bring the children to school, it's now 11 miles. I know of other villages where they have to go out 23 or 24 miles to school and back.

The only certain things are that Castlebar Mitchels, Knockmore and Breaffy will be in the last eight of the competition when it recommences later this summer, leaving five more places still up for grabs from three of the groups.

A 73-year-old man was fatally injured after being struck by a car at Kilkeeran, Kilmaine, on Sunday evening at approximately 8pm.

Cylo-cross cycling league is back

After a successful debut league in 2013 the Connacht Cylo-Cross League is back for a second running this year. This year the league will kick off in Ballinrobe with round one being hosted by Western Lakes CC. The five event series is open to all Cycling Ireland licence holders, you can also use any type of bike with the correct tyres, but it is recommended to use a cylo-cross bike. There will be two categories of races for seniors, with a novice race getting underway before the main race.

The four Egan Jewellers Intermediate Football Championships quarter-finals that were down for decision over this weekend were postponed on Wednesday evening by the county board following discussions with Mayo senior team manager James Horan.
