The Galway county hurling championship got under way last weekend with a raft of first round matches in the group stages.

A fine crowd turned out on Sunday last to witness Kilkenny lead by six points to two after 20 minutes in their bid to retain the Walsh Cup. However, in the run up to the break a scoring tally and a Ger Healion goal saw the half time score read Kilkenny 0-10, Offaly 1-6.

At 2pm St Michael’s take on Kilconly and at 3.30pm Glenamaddy take on Oughterard with the county u-21 final between Tuam Stars and St James’ also on the billing at 5.30pm.

So another year drifts by and the Galway senior footballers once again cannot make any real impression at the business end of the season on the inter-county championship.

County champions Portumna will face Gort in this year’s Stone Crushing & Recycling Senior Hurling Championship semi-final.
