The Galway senior camogie team will face Cork in Semple Stadium, Thurles, on Sunday, May 3 (1.30pm) in the Irish Daily Star division one league final after defeating Kilkenny by 5-7 to 2-9 last weekend in O'Connor Park.

There was disappointment for the Kilkenny senior camogie girls as they were caught by a late Galway flurry in Nowlan Park last Sunday as their league hopes were ended. Kilkenny led by four points at the interval —1-6 to 0-5 and a 45th minute goal from Shelley Farrell followed by a close range free by Aoife Neary restored that four point gap.

There were only two parties rubbing their hands with pleasure after last weekend’s strange round of league action. Those were the Tipperary management team and the GAA authorities. Tipperary sent out a statement of intent with an emphatic victory over Galway at Salthill. As for the GAA they will be delighted that at least four teams are still in the hunt for a league final spot when the last round is played in a fortnight’s time.

Nowlan Park is the setting next Sunday afternoon, when the Irish Daily Star National Camogie league semi-finals take place. Kilkenny are first in the arena at 2pm against Galway, followed at 3.45pm by Tipperary’s clash with defending League/All-Ireland champions Wexford.

An epic weekend of camogie unfolded as the two under-21 Roinn A semi-finals in the St Canice’s Credit union camogie championship plus the Leinster Intermediates were decided. The action began on Saturday as Mullinavat and Clara produced an all-time classic as they clocked up a staggering 15 goals between them in the first semi-final played in Ballyhale last Saturday afternoon.

It was a memorable day for South Kilkenny as Mooncoin, Rower-Inistigoe and Mullinavat all landed league honours. Firstly, a double header of league finals took place in well represented Ballyhale as the St Canice’s Credit Union Junior B and intermediate league finals were down for decision.

Devastation is the only word to describe Kilkenny’s exit from the All-Ireland senior camogie championship as Anne Downey’s troops saw their hopes of lifting the O’Duffy Cup for the first time since 1994 whither away in the space of 90 seconds.

What a day of Camogie to look forward to this Saturday! The four best teams in the land will be going to battle in Nowlan Park as the prestigious prize of the O’Duffy Cup awaits.
