The Church of the Holy Rosary in Castlebar was the venue for a very special performance of Handel’s Messiah last Sunday night.
The soaring and iconic ‘Hallelujah’ chorus of Handel’s Messiah is rumoured to have moved King George II so much at the London premiere of the work in March 1743, that the monarch jumped to his feet in admiration, compelling the rest of the audience to follow suit.
The hardworking men and women of the Handel Challenge Choir and Committee handed over a cheque for €33,543 to Mayo Roscommon Hospice at an event held in The Harlequin Hotel, Castlebar, on Saturday February 8.
A very special performance of Handel’s Messiah will take place on Sunday, December 8 at 7pm, in the Church of the Holy Rosary, Castlebar, with all proceeds going to Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation. It will be hosted by RTÉ’s Mary Kennedy, and feature internationally renowned soloists, Regina Nathan, Ann Marie Gibbons, Eamon Mulhall, and Owen Gilhooley. The Celtic Concert Orchestra and a choir of almost 100 local choristers will perform in what promises to be a truly wonderful event.

As the evenings grow ever darker and December approaches, thoughts turn to the Christmas season; presents, nights out and music. The evening of Friday December 2 will see Castlebar Gospel Choir sharing their own take on some festive favourites and much more during their Christmas Concert in Ballintubber Abbey at 8pm.
