John Lockes of Callan ensured their return to the Intermediate grade next year by winning the JJ Kavanagh & Sons Kilkenny Junior hurling title when they defeated Barrow Rangers by 1-14 to 0-14 in Nowlan Park on Monday last. Looking stronger than they had the previous week the Callanmen came into the replay with great confidence and balance. They enjoyed the advantage of an early goal scored by corner forward Shane Bergin but by half time Barrow Rangers had fought back to level terms 0-7 to 1-4.

A crowd of 11,000 turned up at a bright but very cold Nowlan Park last Sunday to witness O'Loughlin Gaels claiming their third Kilkenny senior county title. The bookies had made Carrickshock favourites, it was a tag that surprised many locals, one can only assume that the odds compiler wasn't aware of the city men's experience and fighting spirit. OK the ‘Shocks had five intercounty players in their ranks but it was widely accepted in Kilkenny that it was O'Loughlin Gaels that had the more balanced outfit.

Callan ladies football was established in 2008 and has a great team in place. However, a new season welcomes new members and all age groups and fitness levels are welcome to join the club.

Callan ladies football team are currently recruiting new players ahead of the junior championship which will take place this July. Training takes place on Monday and Thursday evening in John Lockes GAA pitch, Callan. All fitness levels and from 14 upwards are welcome to join.
