Local concerns raised pre-Budget

Sinn Féin councillor Thérèse Ruane is calling on the people of Mayo to make a stand in relation to the Government which is planning a Budget which will be even more severe than those published by the last administration. “Septic tank charges, household charges, hikes in road taxes, increase in VAT rates, and the USC, along with cuts to social welfare, child benefit, and students grants are more than people can take. Enough is enough.”

Postman sets new record on bike week

Padraig Marrey from Western Lakes CC set a new time from Galway GPO to Limerick GPO when cycling the 58 miles in a time of 2hrs 14mins and 11seconds. He took 20 minutes off the previous time set by Kieran Keane of Dublin. “Everything went according to plan,” said Marrey. “The Garda escort out of Galway and into Limerick were essential and the motorbike escort by Peter Flanagan and Dessie Flynn made sure all potential hazards were kept at bay.”

John Holian memorial cycle race

Western Lakes CC is promoting the John Holian cycle race/lesiure cycle which takes place today Friday June 11. John Holian was a founder member of the Western Lakes CC, which was formed back in 1999, he was a great stalwart to cycling in Connacht acting as manager, mechanic, and driver to many Connacht teams over the years. The event will be a little different as leisure cyclists will get the opportunity to cycle the route ahead of the race, participants can do as many laps as they like.

Western Lakes cream the Covies

Ballinrobe hosted round five of the club league last week, and a big crowd turned out for this hugely contested league. To date the racing has been very close with another bunch sprint. The 26 mile route from Ballinrobe via The Neale, Cross, Glencorrib, Ballyfruit, Shrule, Kilmaine finished outside the Cycling Centre back in Ballinrobe.
