The Dean Crowe Theatre launched its new programme of activity this week. Packed with an eclectic mix of events, the theatre has something for everybody over the coming months. Highlights of the programme include theatre with Phelim Drew, music with Matthew Gilsenan, children’s theatre, family entertainment, schools shows, and lots of comedy with Tommy Tiernan, Rory’s Stories, Joe Rooney, and Patrick McDonnell as well as the Dirtbirds’ Self Help Tour.

The Church of the Holy Rosary in Castlebar was packed to capacity on Wednesday for a special Mass of remembrance for David Gavin, the 26-year-old Breaffy footballer who lost his life in a swimming accident in Canada on June 30. The memorial Mass saw prayers offered for David's family and friends and for finding his body so he can be laid to rest at home.

This week, 100 years ago, British soldiers took part in the Great War battles of Doiran and Mlali. At Doiran, the British and French forces were repeatedly pushed back and finally overpowered by the Bulgarian second infantry division, while at Mlali, the British were victorious over the Germans. Victory and defeat followed each other all too frequently during the four years of the Great War.
