Westport stay top after weekend of big results

When the league seasons comes to a conclusion last weekend's round of action in the Elverys Sports Super League could well be seen as one of the pivotal rounds of action. Champions Westport United were held to 0-0 draw by Ballyheane on Saturday night, that left Ballina Town knowing that if they could see off Castlebar Celtic at home the following day, they would move to within two points of the champions at the top of the table and still have a game in hand.

The last Mayo League side standing the Connacht Junior Cup will be looking to take a big scalp when they head to Galway on Sunday afternoon. Iorras Aontaithe will take on Mervue United in the quarter-final stages of the competition and look to do what fellow Super League side Ballyheane were unable to do in the last round, knock out the Galway city outfit. Mervue are currently sitting in second place in the Premier Division in Galway, five points behind leaders Athenry, with one game left to go in the league and are one of five Galway sides to make the last eight of the Connacht Junior Cup.

Iorras reach the next round while Celtic and Westport crash out

Iorras Aontaithe were the only Mayo winners in last weekend’s Connacht Cup action. The north Mayo men booked their place in round six of the competition with a 3-1 win over fellow Mayo League side Conn Rangers in Carnenash. Iorras took the lead early in the second half through a Brendan Nallen freekick. The Mount Falcon men pulled themselves level just after the 65 minute mark when Shane Maughan found the back of the net. However the homeside went back into the lead around 10 minutes before the end when Jason Boylan pounced, and the win was made safe not long after when Peter Murphy grabbed their third goal.

Crunch month coming up in the Super League

The Super League has been firmly split into two camps for most of the season, and now with only four games to go for the vast majority of the sides the next month will shape the winners and losers. At the top of the table, Westport United, Iorras Aontaithe, and Ballina Town are going at it hammer and tongs for the title, while everyone else from fourth placed Manulla down is battling to beat the drop. It is going to be one hell of an exciting end to the season.
