He was at the helm on their memorable journey which saw them become the first Westmeath side ever to be crowned provincial champions and come within a whisker of all-Ireland glory against Crossmaglen last March.

I don’t know about you, but I have been bored out of my tree watching Gaelic football in this year’s championship so far. As a viewing spectacle it has been very poor fare. Of course it is up to the various counties to raise their standards to those set by the likes of Dublin, Cork and Kerry, but watching the championship over recent seasons suggest that the gap between the elite and the rest is widening. The suggestion from both Colm O’Rourke and Kevin McStay, on last weekend’s Sunday Game, for a two or three tier system is surely going to become a reality sooner or later.

The score line says it all. Wexford were simply in a different class to a Westmeath side which had no answer to the movement and scoring power of their opponents. With a few notable exceptions Westmeath were outclassed in almost every sector of the field.

Westmeath footballers have a glorious opportunity of reaching this year’s Leinster decider despite a tough opener away to Wexford. The provincial draw has been very kind to them as they avoid the big guns of Dublin, Kildare, Meath, and Laois. If they can clear their first hurdle in Wexford Park tomorrow evening (Saturday) then they will face either Louth or Carlow in a semi-final. It is hard to look beyond a Louth win over Luke Dempsey’s men in that one and they would hardly instil fear in Westmeath.

The Galway football panel and the management team will have to dust themselves down and try to shake off their collective disappointment after last Saturday’s one-point defeat to Sligo in the Connacht semi-final.
