Lower Dominick Street about one hundred and fifty years ago

According to Hely Dutton, Dominick Street was built in the early part of the 19th century. It was outside the old city walls and was an indicator of how Galway was beginning to expand at the time. This photograph, which was taken c1965, is probably the earliest existing image of the street.

A 32-year-old man with 56 previous convictions was sentenced to 11 months in jail for burglary and fraud offences at Galway District Court this week.

Young Pugilists take to scales

The younger pugilists in Connacht boxing will have the opportunity to qualify for the National Championships this weekend on Saturday, March 9 and Sunday, March 10 in Foxford Sports and Leisure Centre. Following a very successful Boy 4, Youth 1, Youth 2 Championships in the same venue and again hosted by the Knockmore Boxing Club the Boy 1, 2, 3 and under 18 Girls and Boys will take to the scales at 9am and the first boxers will step between the ropes at noon. A large entry is expected into these championships from the 47 clubs throughout the province and the finals will be held in Oughterard on Saturday March 16 commencing at 10 am.

'Menace' burglar jailed for twenty months

A Galway man, described as a menace to society, was sentenced to 20 months at Galway District Court yesterday for his involvement in a number of burglaries in which laptops were taken.
