Kilkenny's bid for their 15th league title was halted in spectacular fashion by Dublin; a lot of post-mortems took place around the county. Everyone has their own version of what happened and what should be done going forward.

To say I am lost for words after Kilkenny’s dismal display last Sunday is putting it very mildly. The defeat is one thing but the manner of it is of more concern. First things first, hats off to Dublin on winning their first National League title since 1939 they were truly magnificent on the day and thoroughly deserved their victory.

The Village got off to a flying start in the Kilkenny senior hurling league/championship with a 2-22 to 0-11 win over Tullaroan last Sunday in Tom Ryall Park. The Village boys cemented this fine win in the opening quarter when a teasing ball into the forward division was won by the hard working and lively Eoin McCormack who took on the Tullaroan defence and passed the ball off to corner forward, Niall Tyrrell who sent the ball to the net.

Twelve months ago most of the final round games of the National Hurling League were played out as mere challenge matches — Galway and Cork had already qualified for the spring showdown. The only games of any consequences were played by Limerick and Offaly who were both looking to avoid the relegation drop.

Last weekend’s game between Kilkenny and Waterford was far from a classic, it was one of those start stop encounters that just never got going. Cork referee Sexton was whistle happy but in his defence having watched the match again on TV a lot of his calls were justified.

Richie Hogan was the star of the show for Kilkenny in their close win over Cork 0-14 to 1-10 in their Allianz Hurling League Division 1 clash on Sunday last in Nowlan Park. Kilkenny were more dominant in the first half after which they led by eight points. While Cork came storming back into the game in the second half and looked like they might secure the spoils this was dashed by Richie Hogan’s late point.

The nominees for the 2010 Opel GPA Hurling Team of the Year were announced earlier in the week by the Gaelic Players Association. A total of 45 players have been shortlisted for the Team of the Year, while four players also received nominations for the prestigious Opel GPA Hurler of the Year Award.
