Noel Gibbons, road safety officer with Mayo County Council, has won the Road Safety Officer of the Year Award from the Road Safety Authority. At a presentation to mark the occasion by RSA chairman Gay Byrne at the RSA’s Leading Lights in Road Safety awards in Dublin Castle, Mr Gibbons was honoured for his work promoting road safety in Mayo through creative and informative road safety campaigns, and his ongoing efforts to support and complement the work of the Road Safety Authority and An Garda Síochána through national campaigns.

European Mobility Week takes place from September 16 to 22 and Castlebar will help celebrate this with a number of events and initiatives taking place in the town.

The Mayor of Castlebar, Cllr Ger Deere Deputy Mayor, Cllr Thérèse Ruane have both got on their bikes this weekend to try out the first cycle lane in the county town. Both the Mayor and the Deputy Mayor are members of Iompar Castlebar, a group working to promote cycling and sustainable transport in the region and have warmly welcomed the new cycle lane at Davitts Terrace.

Iompar Castlebar has welcomed the announcement by Mayo County Council this week that it is now implementing the Bike to Work Scheme.
