St Patrick’s Band, the early days

One of the most enduring of Galway's institutions is this band which has given pleasure to its own members and countless thousands of members of the public since it was formed in Forster Street in 1896. Thanks to dedicated leaders and teachers, this group of musicians continues to entertain. The founders were Peter Rabbitt, a Forster Street publican and grocer, Paddy Walsh, the station master and Michael Spelman of Moon’s staff.

In the 1930s, Ireland instructed all of its consul officials in Europe not to issue visas to Jewish refugees, but the country was also in a state of economic stagnation at the time and Seán Lemass realised that new industries would help the country. An Irish Jewish businessman, Marcus Witztum, offered to help him and went to Paris, met Henri Orbach there who owned a small hat factory and suggested he open a business in Ireland, a safer place for people of the Jewish persuasion than continental Europe. Orbach agreed.

Memorial garden planted in memory of respected Castlebar man

The late Leo O'Shaughnessy from Market Square, Castlebar, who died in May of this year, was a well-respected gentleman who had a long tradition of leaving flowers on doorsteps around the town of Castlebar on May Day for many decades.
