Since it’s Hallowe’en this evening you’re probably braced for the patter of tiny feet beneath a panoply of fearsome costumes and the piping of tiny voices shrilly demanding “trick or treat, trick or treat”. While trick or treating is a relatively recent tradition that in its current form has come across the Atlantic, there are many other customs relating to Hallowe’en – or All Hallows Eve – that have fallen out of favour over the years.

We all know that this time of year is one that children look forward to for months. What to dress up as and where is best to go trick or treating? However, most of all what ‘goodies’ will I get? Are Hallowe’en ‘goodie bags’ all about junk foods or can we make them healthier?

The John Street garden centre will run its annual pumpkin carving kids club on October 27, 28 and 29. Children from age five years and up are invited to take part in this fun and exciting class, where they will learn about pumpkin carving and the fun that comes around this spooky Halloween time.

A lack of funding will see community warden patrols finish before dark on Halloween night, leaving bonfire safety to the Garda, and fire services, according to chairman of the joint policing committee, Councillor Padraig Conneely.

All manner of ghastly ghouls came out in force on Halloween night for Finbar Hoban Presents... ‘I know what you did last Halloween’ – a spooky, kooky, and fun night with some great alternative music and some even more alternative costumes! The variety of costumes on show was entertainment enough in itself, some examples being; a Miss Incredible, an early eighties Madonna, a Mr and Mrs Satan Claus, and a Chewbacca. Prizes for best costume went to Adrian Ryan/Satan Claus, Aisling Holian/Miss Incredible, and Keith Mc Greal/Man with knife in back. There was also a ‘Monster Mash’, a ‘Thriller’ dance off. And that’s not to mention the best, and most important part, which is what the Bar Ritz gigs have now become renowned for the music.
