Events coming thick and fast across the county

There were three boxing tournaments held in Mayo last week in Ardnaree, Achill, and Castlebar and this weekend they keep coming with tournaments hosted by Ardagh Boxing Club in Hiney’s tonight Friday, January 17. That will be followed by a Geesala Boxing Club tournament in the High Chaparral on Saturday night and a Charlestown Boxing Club tournament in CBD Sports Complex on Sunday afternoon.

Twin internationals for Mayo female boxers

Three Mayo female boxers will represent Ireland against Poland in historic twin boxing internationals this weekend. The St Brigid’s BC in Edenderry, Co Offaly, which is are celebrating their 80th anniversary this year, will host its first women’s boxing international in Ireland at the Hamlet Court Hotel in Kildare on Sunday December 8. Forty eight hours before the Kildare clash, a Belfast International Select goes head-to-head with the Poles at the Whiterock Leisure Centre in Belfast. Castlebar’s Grainne Gavin will compete at the 54kg weight at both events with Geesala boxer Ciara Ginty, the current AIBA World Junior champion and AIBA World Female Junior boxer of 2013, who will be between the ropes in Kildare alongside her, and Lycia Heneghan from the Aglish boxing club.

Two Mayo boxers in World youth and junior semi-finals today

The hard work being done by the boxers and coaches in Mayo continues to garner success on the biggest stage this week, with at least two Mayo girls guaranteed at least bronze medals in the World Female Youth and Junior Boxing Championships which are taking place in Bulgaria.

Mayo female’s shine at Europeans

Six Mayo female boxers travelled to Keszthely in Hungry last Sunday week for the 2013 European Union youth, junior and senior championships. Jacqui Lynch (Golden Gloves BC), Ciara Sheedy (Swinford BC), Ciara Ginty (Geesala BC), Grainne Gavin (Castlebar BC), Lycia Heneghan (Ballinrobe BC) and Cathy Higgins (Ardnaree BC) were part of the 26 boxing team hoping to bring home a medal.

Coyle inducted into Hall of Fame

Geesala Boxing Club’s Gerry Coyle was joined by friends and family when he was inducted into the Mayo Boxing Hall of Fame at the Mayo Boxing Awards night recently. Gerry was credited on the night for all the work he has done for the Geesala Boxing Club including his involvement in hosting some of the biggest boxing events in Mayo. Gerry has been involved in bringing Barry McGuigan, Katie Taylor and Henry Coyle’s world title fights to Mayo.

Mayo girls go for European glory

Mayo’s talented young boxers will be out in force in European competition over the next five weeks. Mayo will have six boxers participating in the Women’s European Union Senior and Youth Championships in Keszthely, Hungary, next month. Seven time national champion Jacqui Lynch (Golden Gloves BC) will be in action in the championships. Lynch won double National titles this season and is having a fantastic season. The Belmullet boxer won the National title and two weeks later was victorious in the Girl 15, (48 kg) division.

Two dozen Mayo girls in national finals

A squad of 24 female boxers from 10 clubs in Mayo will attempt to add additional titles to the 18 national titles won by various boxers from the county so far this season. The action will commence this evening (Friday) continuing tomorrow in the National Stadium in Dublin. Geesala BC will have the biggest contingent with six boxers in the finals. Golden Gloves and St Anne’s each has four boxers in the finals, with Castlebar sending forward three, Ballinrobe two, and one each from Ardagh/Crossmolina, Swinford, Ballyhaunis, Ballina, and Knockmore.

Big weekend of action at St Anne’s and Castlebar tournaments

St Anne’s Boxing club held a very successful tournament in the Peter Callaghan Centre last Saturday night, January 12, winning 10 of the 16 contests on the bill. The female bout between Ellen McDonagh (St Anne’s) and Rosie Conway (Geesala) was awarded the best contest of the evening and Liam McStravick (St Anne’s) received the award for the best boxer of the night.
