Tricksters, undemonstrative fathers, and other stories...

I wonder would the following story still happen in Galway today. It happened in more innocent times, in the early 1960s. A very upper class gentleman, Major Woodfall Murphy, rented Bermingham House, the great 18th century pile once owned by the barons of Athenry, on the outskirts of Tuam. The genuinely snobby Lady Molly Cusack Smith, who owned the pile, was only too glad with the promised extra lolly. To the outsider it all felt hunky-dory: One snob helping another.

Ross na Ruin

IT MAY be the season of festive cheer and good will but there is unlikely to be much jollity in evidence when Four Angry Men - pundits David McWilliams, Fintan O’Toole, Shane Ross, and Nick Webb – take to the stage of the Radisson Hotel this Sunday.

The Irish-American vote

The Irish-American vote used to be a sure thing. If you were Irish-American, you voted Democrat. It was as simple as that. When I was growing up in 1950s Chicago, Republicans were like another species. An analogy from Baseball. As a Chicagoan, you supported either the White Sox or the Cubs. It was a tribal thing. My family were White Sox fans. So I was a White Sox fan. Cubs fans, on the other hand, were weird. Why would anyone support the Cubs? In much the same way, Republicans were weird too. Why would anyone support the Republicans? If you were Irish-American, even to pose the question bordered on the ridiculous.

Hectic programme of events for Halloween week at Coole Park

Families across the Galway region should reserve a few hours for the ‘Deireadh an Fomhair’ celebrations at Coole Park during the October Bank Holiday weekend. Spooky Stuff For Kids consists of smelly spell cocktail and stick skeleton making, with an eerily themed scavenger hunt to finish the day. Children are invited to arrive bedecked in a Halloween costume but they do not have to dress up. The fun begins at 2.30pm and ends at 4pm.

If anyone thought that academics sharing their enthusiasm for the landscape, writers and artists associated with Coole Park, Co Galway, would be boring and stuffy, they had a surprise last weekend. There were some jaw-dropping moments when Lady Augusta Gregory’s secret love affair was revealed; and when WB Yeats went off the rails in the years following her death, and had a series of love affairs.
