Environmental and habitats assessments holding up Knock Airport plan

A draft of a local area plan for Ireland West Airport Knock, which Mayo County Council hoped to have ready for the members of the Swinford Electoral Area committee for the November meeting, has been held up. Members of the committee were informed this week by council officials that they were still working on the environmental assessment and the Habitats Directive assessment for the area of the plan. The members were told that the council was doing the work on these assessments in-house, whereas previously it would have been contracted to outside consultants, but they still hoped to have a draft plan ready for the councillors before Christmas.

Murray calls for traffic corps to be disbanded

Sinn Féin councillor Gerry Murray this week called for the Garda traffic corps to be disbanded, asking that ordinary members of the Gardaí deal with traffic duties so that more gardaí could be deployed in the towns around the county. Cllr Murray told the July meeting of Mayo County Council: “The ordinary Gardaí in the county are trained to carry out all the functions of the traffic corps and they can carry out these duties as part of their ordinary work. If this happened it would free up members who are solely on traffic duty to come back into the community and give extra bodies to police in the locality around the county”.
