Independent councillor Michael Holmes has called on Mayo County Council to take charge of semi-private access roads across the county which have been affected by the drastic reduction of Local Improvement Scheme (LIS) funding in recent years. Speaking at a Belmullet Electoral Area meeting last week, Holmes said it was unrealistic and unfair to ask people to pay for the maintenance of certain access roads through their villages and townlands.

The total cost to rectify all the deficiencies in the local road network throughout Galway county would be approximately €246 million, according to a recent study carried out by the local authority roads unit.

According to Westmeath County Council councillor John Dolan, some 70 per cent of all fatal accidents occur on local roads. Yet Noel Dempsey has abandoned plans, announced just two months ago, to upgrade roads around the country in a move which will inevitably cost jobs and could cost lives as a result of further blackspot accidents, Cllr Dolan warns.
