The benefit of the addition of former Kildare star James Kavanagh to Milltown’s senior football championship challenge was clear to see last Saturday evening at Pearse Stadium, as John Concannon’s side gave Cárna-Caiseal a good trimming, on a score-line of 3-14 to 0-5. Kavanagh kicked one terrific point in the first half and also notched a few frees in the second, but it was his work-rate, link-play and overall contribution to the cause that caught the eye. Experienced scoring forwards are hard to come by at the moment, and Kavanagh can be a really key player for the “Scans” as their season progresses.

St James joined Salthill in the Galway Senior Football Championship quarter-finals with a hard earned 1-10 to 0-8 victory over Caltra on Saturday evening in Tuam Stadium.

Two years ago in Markievicz Park - the last time the sides met in championship - Sligo won by 1-14 to 0-16. It was a replay and it had taken a super goal by Eoin Concannon (St James) in Pearse Stadium to even give Galway a second day out.

There is a double header at Pearse Stadium on Saturday evening with the other five games fixed for Sunday. The Cortoon Shamrocks and Micheal Breathnachs fixture cannot go ahead as Mountbellew/Moylough continue with their ill thought out appeal process. They have been beaten twice on the field of play this season already and they should just move on from those defeats. Four of Sunday’s games are down as double headers at Corofin and Tuam, with Carraroe and Annaghdown on in Pearse Stadium. There will be extra time in any of the games that end in a draw.

The Galway footballers were knocked out of the championship on Saturday in Navan after being beaten by a point, 0-11 to 0-10, by a limited home side.
