Bish move to Dangan back on the agenda in new draft development plan

Plans to move St Joseph’s College, The Bish, to a new site were back before the Galway City Council this week following a proposal seeking to designate lands in Dangan, owned by NUI Galway, for the development of a secondary school. St Ignatius College’ on Sea Road opened its doors for the first time in 1862. The Jesuits built a residence and a church at the same time and the move proved to be a success for them. Attendances at Mass and ceremonies grew rapidly. The college, however, was more of a challenge. The boys ranged in age from nine to 13 and the subjects taught included mathematics, Latin, Greek, and elocution. The numbers at first were as expected. They grew steadily to 90 in 1865 and reached 110 by 1874, but they began to fall thereafter and were inconsistent from year to year. The number recorded for 1899 was 49. 

Galway’s newest secondary school officially launched

An event took place this week to mark the launch of Our Lady’s College, which will officially open its doors in September 2016. This new school represents the union of two well-known Galway educational facilities; Presentation Secondary School and Mercy Newtownsmith.

Impact to hold information meeting for school secretaries and caretakers today

IMPACT trade union will host an information meeting at the IMPACT office, Unit 23/24 Sean Mulvoy Business Park, Sean Mulvoy Road, today Thursday (November 26) at 5pm to provide information to school secretaries and caretakers paid from grant funding to schools. A recent arbitration finding has recommended four separate pay rises of 2.5 per cent for these workers between 2016 and 2019.
