A Mayo journalist who writes a regular column in a Northern Ireland newspaper has been the focus of a number of letters of opposition from Unionist leaders in recent weeks asking for her column to be removed.

Several artists showcase at Shankhill Castle

Ceann 2011, is an exhibition being held in the historic setting of Shankill Castle in Paulstown, Co Kilkenny as part of the Kilkenny Arts Festival. Nominate your ‘leading light’ in road safety

----With just a few weeks to go before the closing date, the Road Safety Authority (RSA) is reminding people nationwide to get their entries in for the 2011 Leading Lights in Road Safety Awards. The awards recognise the extraordinary and often un-sung contributions of people across Ireland to make roads safer. The closing date for entries is Friday September 16 and the winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in Farmleigh House on Wednesday October 12. Information on the categories and how to nominate a ‘Leading Light’, as well as entry forms, are available at www.rsa.ie/leadinglights.

Joyce’s supermarket wins national retailing award

Retailers across the country were recognised for their outstanding contribution to fresh food at Checkout Magazine’s “Best in Fresh” awards last Tuesday, and there was cause for celebration for one Galway store. The event saw hundreds of stores across Ireland audited by independent judges and Joyce’s Supermarket in Knocknacarra was awarded the title of Best Non–Affiliated Retailer in Ireland. According to the judging panel, Joyce’s offer the best fresh food offering, with a large selection of the freshest food sourced from many local suppliers. The fresh food team were commended for their passion and knowledge of the food.

Ring Girls throws Galway light on boxing’s forgotten women

On Saturday at 2pm, RTE Radio One will air a documentary with distinct Galway connections. Produced by Renmore native Niall Fallon and featuring Joanna Fitzpatrick from Forster Court, as well as vox pops from the Galway public, Ring Girls takes a look at the women who parade around the boxing ring notifying the crowd of the next round. As intrinsic and iconic part of the boxing spectacle as ropes and canvas, this documentary promises to give an interesting insight into an often forgotten aspect of the sport.
