It is going to be a summer of change at Mercy Primary School in the heart of the city. While the school year might be winding down elsewhere, the 176-year-old school is getting ready for one of the most momentous changes in its history.

Divine Mercy Ceremonies will take place on Sunday April 23 in Knock Shrine (12.45pm), Galway Cathedral (2pm), and Emmanuel House Clonfert (2pm).

Divine Mercy Sunday is celebrated on the Sunday after Easter, the Octave of Easter, observed by Roman Catholic as well as some Anglicans. It is originally based on the Catholic devotion to the Divine Mercy that Saint Faustina Kowalska reported as part of her encounter with Jesus, and is associated with special promises from Jesus and indulgences issued by the Church.

Archbishop of Tuam Michael Neary has opened a ‘Holy Door’ at Knock Shrine as Catholics across the world have started to observe and celebrate Pope Francis’ historic ‘Year of Mercy’. The world’s media and tens of thousands of people gathered in St Peter’s Basilica on December 8 to watch Pope Francis open the Holy Door in Rome, a tradition that dates back to the 1400s.

Divine Mercy Sunday Ceremonies will take place at Knock Shrine on May 1 next at 12.45 with concelebrated Mass in the Basilica at 3pm.
