Promotion secured as Westmeath footballers produce yet another winning performance

image preview

What a difference a year makes. Hard to believe that a little over a year ago there were strong fears throughout the county that Westmeath were in real danger of dropping to division 3. Pat Flanagan’s belief in his side proved well founded as they recorded wins over Galway, Monaghan, and Derry to retain their place in division 2 against the odds.

A gutsy 0-16 to 2-9 opening round win over Louth last Sunday was the perfect start to the new season for Pat Flanagan’s side who look well placed to collect another valuable brace of league points when they make the short journey to Pearse Park, Longford this Sunday.

For the third year running Louth are the opposition as Westmeath begin their league campaign. This time last year remaining in division 2 was the main and seemingly doubtful goal. Deja vu as Garrycastle and Shamrocks end in stalemate

As county finals go this was quite bizarre. For two thirds of the game Garrycastle looked to be on course to collect their fourth Flanagan Cup on the trot without being asked too many questions. Never out of third gear and holding a 3-7 to 1-4 lead early in the second half the reigning champs could well be forgiven for thinking they had at least one hand on the cup.

Westmeath SFC Final

Garrycastle progress to decider but must await opponents

It is no big surprise that Garrycastle find themselves back in yet another county decider following their 4-10 to 0-12 win over Maryland. The final scoreline however is somewhat flattering to the winners and doesn’t do justice to the challenge which Finbar Egan’s side put up for much of the game.

Garrycastle and Shamrocks can set up a repeat of last year’s decider

It’s semi-final time in the Westmeath senior football championship with two very interesting games down for decision this Sunday in Cusack Park. Holders Garrycastle take on surprise packet Maryland at 2.30pm followed by the all-Mullingar clash of St Loman’s and Shamrocks at 4pm.

No big surprises in round two of club championship

There were no big surprises in round two of the Westmeath senior football championship which took place last weekend. Castledaly were fancied by many to upset the odds against a new look Garrycastle side but the experience of the reigning champions was enough to see them through after a battle. In the end they had four points to spare with James Dolan’s goal sealing matters. Dessie Dolan once again pulled the strings for the men in red and green while Adam Kennedy marked his senior championship with a great performance at centre-back.
