THE ANNUAL Over The Edge Poetry Book Showcase, takes place in Charlie Byrne’s Bookshop, Middle Street, on Friday February 11 at 6pm.

On a bright Good Friday morning when Good Friday was Good Friday I was sitting behind the counter of the bookshop, then in High Street. Suddenly, the front door windows blacked out, the door opened and one of the biggest men I have ever seen walked in, followed by a much older man, obviously a relation. They greeted me in Irish and then passed through to the Gallery.

THE WORK of some poets is great, or at least initially sounds great, when you hear it declaimed from a festival stage, but is rather less rewarding when read on the page, in the absence of the bells and whistles of performance.

TOMORROW MARKS a significant milestone in Elaine Cosgrove’s career as a writer. BACK IN the day, when the only poetry textbooks in our secondary schools were Intermediate Cert Poetry and Leaving Cert Poetry, should an intrepid pupil have the temerity to ask “What is poetry?” the answer generally given was “a lyric”.

Tonight, Friday, October 23 a great night of  poetry and song is in store in Claremorris when Terry McDonagh and the Reidy Brothers, Ger and Tony take to the stage of the Town Hall Theatre at 7.30pm.
