Missed opportunity as St Loman’s fall short

The Saints go marching on

Newly crowned Westmeath champions St Loman’s and experienced Roscommon kingpins St Brigid’s both got their respective provincial campaign off to a winning start last weekend. The Mullingar side had to fight hard for their one-point win over Carlow’s Old Leighlin while it was all too easy for St Brigid’s who were never tested by disappointing Sligo champions Tourlestrane.

Tyrrellspass can edge mouth-watering county final

Following their five-point win over reigning champions Mullingar Shamrocks last weekend it is Tyrrellspass who will square up to St Loman’s in this year’s senior county final which is down for decision this Sunday.

Saints and Shamrocks bidding to make it an all-Mullingar county final

The business end of the senior football championship has arrived with the two semi-finals down for decision this weekend.

Lots of close contests expected in round three of football championship

Round three of the Westmeath senior football championship takes place this weekend and there are few if any certainties in what should be an interesting selection of games. The Downs, Garrycastle, Castledaly, Maryland, Shamrocks, and St Loman’s have each been given the favourites tag ahead of their respective games and while they may all oblige, with question marks hanging over most teams, I expect a few upsets over the weekend.

Saints lay down a marker

Having flagged the possibility of an upset here last week little did I think that St Loman’s would overturn Garrycastle in such convincing fashion. Their 10 point win over the men from the south of the county is undoubtedly the talking point after round 2 of the senior club championship. Write Garrycastle off at your peril though. When their injuries clear up I feel they will still have a big say in the outcome of this year’s championship. It does however show how vulnerable they are when a few of their more seasoned campaigners are absent which has to be a major worry from their point of view.
