Fabulous fungi with Evergreen Healthfoods

Did you know that the largest known organism on Earth is the mycelium of an Armillaria ostoyae (honey mushroom) in eastern Oregon? It covers an expanse of 890 hectares, and is more than 2,000 years old. Truly there are lessons to be learned in longevity and productivity from the magical mushrooms that surround us – no wonder then that more than 100 types are currently being studied to explore the possible benefits they could offer to us. Here are some of Evergreen's favourite fungi.

Goals galore light up the league

Claremorris bounced back from their crushing defeat at the hands of Ballyglass last weekend, with a stunning 6-4 win over Iorras Aontaithe. Goals certainly will not be a problem for the south Mayo men this season, as they produced a sparkling display on Sunday afternoon with last season’s Premier A top goalscorer Dean Roddy opening his Super League account with four goals. Hubert Kowalski and Simon Butler also fired home for Mark Peters' troops, in a game where they led 4-1 at the short whistle. In another game with a bagful of goals on Sunday, Ballina Town recorded a comprehensive 9-0 win over north Mayo neighbours Conn Rangers. It was the ultimate performance by Ballina with Keith Duffy grabbing four goals in a man of the match display. Brendan Lavelle chipped in with two along with efforts from Aidan O’Hora, Conor Quinn and former Castlebar Celtic frontman Paul Fitzpatrick.

With Ballina Town in action in the Connacht Junior Cup against Galway Bohs there was only four games down for decision on the opening weekend. Current holders Westport entertained Super League newbies Glenhest Rovers to the Sports Park on Sunday afternoon. In a closely fought affair, goals from David Hoban and Adam Mulchrone got the Covies off to a flying start in a 2-0 win. Ciaran Kelly and his Castlebar Celtic side travelled to North Mayo on Saturday evening and they gained a share of the spoils in a real humdinger. Anthony Johnston, Ioseph O’Reilly and Jamie Ivers opened their league accounts for the Hoops, whilst Jason Boylan, Tom Ivan and Jamie Flannery were on target for Iorrais in a 3-3 draw.
