Newly crowned Westmeath champions Mullingar Shamrocks suffered a humiliating defeat in Cusack Park against a highly impressive Ballymun machine on Sunday last. It was always going to be a difficult hurdle for Ray Smyth’s men to clear but the manner of their defeat has taken many by surprise.

Mullingar Shamrocks will be hoping it is a case of third time lucky as they booked their place in the county senior decider for the third year running thanks to a 3-7 to 1-10 win over neighbours St Loman’s last Sunday.

The fifth, and final, round of group games in the senior football championship are down for decision this weekend. The outcome of each of the six scheduled games will be eagerly awaited as some clubs bid to secure a direct passage to the semi-final, others to gain a place in the knockout stages and yet others battle to avoid a dreaded relegation dogfight.

The opening round of games of this year’s Shay Murtagh Precast Westmeath senior football club championship took place last weekend and there were plenty of talking points not least of which was Tyrrellspass’ draw with beaten all-Ireland finalists Garrycastle.

Pat Flanagan hit back at his critics, Tom Farrell rejected misleading reports in the national media about the state of the county’s finances, and we were nicely beaten by Wicklow in a recent challenge match.

Lightning isn’t supposed to strike twice but unfortunately for Westmeath footballers their dismal showing in Wexford was repeated in Casement Park last Saturday as they were put to the sword by an Antrim side.

Following their impressive 1-15 to 1-5 win over Laois in the opening round, Westmeath u21 footballers now face neighbours Offaly this Wednesday (March 9) in Pairc Chiarain Athlone at 7.30pm.
