The Minister for Labour Affairs Dara Calleary has welcomed the adoption of proposals by the Hotels Joint Labour Committee that will bring Sunday premium payments for workers in the hotel sector outside Dublin and Cork into line with the new rates recently agreed for catering establishments throughout the country. Under the proposals, the existing entitlement to payment of double time for Sunday work will be replaced by a rate of time plus one third.

Massive jobs blow for Belmullet

The news that ICT Eurotel is to close its Belmullet base of operations has come as a huge blow to the area. The closure of the call centre will see 82 jobs lost and will be a detrimental blow to the community in the area. ICT Eurotel employed 39 full-time and 43 part-time staff in its Belmullet operation and is expected to have completely wound down its operations by October this year.

Phone users to be protected against scams by new legislation

New legislation has been introduced by the Government to tackle text and phone scams. The legislation will regulate operators who offer premium rate services such as ring tones, competition text lines, and sports results and will be welcome news to phone users in Mayo who have been scammed in the past by the exorbitant rates charged by some companies.
