Galway golfers celebrate

Galway Golf Club is celebrating its second Irish Senior Cup in four years having claimed the most coveted trophy in club golf at the weekend. Galway - winners of their first senior cup in 2006 - overcame a young West Waterford team by 3.5 to 1.5 at Tullamore. The West Waterford side, with an average age of just 20, made Galway work for the prize after the scores were tied at 1-1 following wins by Waterford’s Mark Shanahan and Galway's Damien Glynn. West Waterford’s spirit was embodied by 16-year old schoolboy Gary Hurley, who came back from three down with four to play to take Eddie McCormack to the 19th. The 2007 West of Ireland champion Joe Lyons defeated 20-year old David Curran 2 and 1, while Damien Coyne beat Philip Spratt on the 18th. Schoolboy Gary Hurley came back from three down with four to play to take Eddie McCormack to the 19th and then halved the extra hole before the match was called in.
