In December 1923, the committee of Galway Golf club, then based at Barna, decided to explore the idea of acquiring the late Col O’Hara’s estate at Blackrock and on April 24, 1924, they bought the West Lodge and the land at Pollnarooma for £4,750 plus £237 auctioneer’s fees. Messrs Tighe, Kennedy, Lenihan and Quinlan were appointed to oversee the laying out of the new course and the renovation of West Lodge which had been Col O’Hara’s house.

On February 6, 1898, Colonel O’Hara from Lenaboy Castle and Henry Hodgson from Currerevagh, Oughterard came together to found The Corrib Fisheries Association for the further improvement of trout fishing on the Corrib. They teamed up with the Board of Conservators of the Galway District to promote proper angling on the Corrib. In 1907, they managed to convince the Department of Agriculture to build a trout hatchery on the Owenriff River in Oughterard. It worked very well for a number of years but eventually fell into decline and closed down in 1924.

On September 3, 1939 at 11am, many Galwegians listened to the British prime minister’s broadcast declaring war on Germany. Very early the following morning, the following dramatic radio message came through to the Harbour Office. “Norwegian Motor Vessel Knute Nelson picked up 450 shipwrecked people, proceeding Galway. Due tomorrow morning, Tuesday 5th. Please arrange tender for landing same. Also notify pilot on Aran Islands. Please have medical supplies ready, From Master, September 4th”.
