There are two new exhibitions running in the Custom House studio until June 24. The exhibitions will consist of work from Ger Sweeney and Brid Danaher. Sweeney says of his current exhibition: “For my current series of new work I have taken a broader, more exploratory approach, the intention being to engage with spontaneous and painterly aspects, to allow the work to evolve and diversify. In order to experiment with and present this approach, I decided to work on a small scale, and in very limited series and variations, too see where it would take me.

New David Finn exhibition at the Custom House

David Finn’s debut solo exhibition is a multi-disciplined collection of work, which considers our relationship with the modern landscape that surrounds us. Undergoing injudicious change over the last few decades, this landscape is perhaps a tangible reflection of the shifts in our societal and political attitudes and trends. In the 42 works included in the exhibition, the artist explores the subject through a selection of paintings, installation work, sculpture and prints. The exhibition will run until September 12. The Custom House Studio is located at The Quay, Westport, Co Mayo.

Summer of exhibitions ahead at the Custom House

Alison Pilkington’s show Between One Thing and Another brings together work from the first year of her practice based PhD at National College Art and Design Dublin. The exhibition will run until June 13 at the Custom House studio. Her work is centred around how imagery in painting can be presented in such a way that viewers must reconstruct it themselves in order for it to make sense. The suspended moment before this process takes place she identifies as “the uncanny moment” that exists in certain artworks. Leading on from this she examines the various forms of artifice that an artist may employ in order to bring about a genuine emotional response. One that may jolt us from our constant distracted complacency, surrounded as we are by a rapid bombardment of imagery. She hopes that painting has unique qualities that require slow, routine, and ‘active’ looking that lead to an appreciation that has been ‘learned’ from the painting rather than merely ‘seen’.

Lost Country exhibItion in the Custom House Studio

Lost Country is an exhibition exploring place, memory and the links between past and present by artist Feargal O’Malley. It focuses on construction of landscapes from childhood memories of time spent in Westport, and the day-to-day life of the artist growing up and as an adult in Craigavon, Northern Ireland. Certain memories come to mind even though we are located in completely differnt environments. Each piece reflects how stimulus from the artist's life in Craigavon can prompt memories of his childhood holidays in the west of Ireland and inform a visual portrayal of these memories. The resulting imagery can be somewhat idealistic, - given the dramatic changing landscape in both areas - a result of the recent housing boom. Feargal O’Malley is an artist based in Co Armagh. His exhibition runs until August 24 in the Custom House Studios Gallery which is located at the Quay in Westport and is open every day. You can call 098 28735 for more information.
