McCann and Keegan to meet in provincial decider

Mayo’s senior handballers saw competitive action for the first time this year as the provincial singles and doubles semi-final were played last week. Dessie Keegan defeated club mate Vincent Moran very comfortably to reach the provincial senior final while Joe McCann accounted for Galway’s Ollie Conway in the other semi-final despite the loss of the opening game on an overall 16-21 , 21-6, 21-1 scoreline.

Winning a provincial title at club level is a great honour and Galway County champions Corofin annexed their fourth Connacht title last Sunday by easily defeating Eastern Harps from Sligo. Corofin’s previous provincial successes came in 1991, 1995 and 1997 and they are now second in the provincial honours list behind the magnificent Clann na Gael team that won seven titles, including a sensational six-in-a-row from 1984 to 1989.

Mayo sides ready for provincial action

Three Mayo sides will go into action in the Connacht championship this weekend looking to book their places in the Connacht final. Carnacon, who are old hands at this level, will be defending their Connacht and All Ireland titles on the line on Saturday in Leitrim when they take on the Leitrim champions Aughawillan in the senior semi-final at 4pm in Leitrim Gaels Community pitch. The vastly experienced Carnacon side will go into the game as hot favourites with either Geevagh from Sligo or Corofin from Galway waiting for the winners in the final.
