Next Sunday in Tuam Stadium (2pm) the two best senior club Gaelic football teams in Connacht over the past three years battle for the Shane McGettigan Cup and the honour of being the 2015 Connacht champions.

Castlebar Mitchels qualified for a mouth watering Connacht final clash with All Ireland champions Corofin after a hard fought win over Roscommon Champions Clann Na Gael in Hyde Park last Sunday. It was a classic case of goals win games as The Mitchels pounced for three first half goals that really left the Roscommon outfit with a mountain to climb.

Following Corofin’s facile 4-14 to 2-6 demolition of St. Mary’s (Sligo) last weekend at Markievicz Park, and Castlebar Mitchels impressive 3-8 to 0-13 victory over Clann na nGael at Hyde Park, the sides will meet in the Connacht club senior final in Tuam Stadium (2pm) on November 22.

After the high of winning their second senior county title in three years, it was back to the mundane business of league football for Castlebar Mitchels last weekend. But they had a job to do and they did it in style hammering Crossmolina Deel Rovers and in the process picking up the senior league title to go with the championship they'd won the week before.

There was just one nominee for the vacant position Mayo GAA senior team manager. Nominations for the post closed on Sunday evening and the only nomination recieved was for Stephen Rochford. The Crossmolina native was nominated by his home club Crossmolina Deel Rovers and by Ballinrobe GAA clubs (Rochford lives in Ballinrobe). 

Galway county champions Corofin are expected to be far too strong for Leitrim champions Mohill in the Connacht championship quarter-final in Tuam Stadium on Sunday (2pm).

What a feast of sport we had last Sunday. Two quality performances by Breaffy and Castlebar in the Mayo championship semifinals followed by as gutsy a performance as you are likely to see by the Irish Rugby team, only to be deflated by the Republic of Ireland soccer team failing to gain automatic qualification for the Euros when they were defeated by Poland.

When I played with the Corofin seniors from 1989 until 2004, we had a fairly good team, with Michael and Aidan Donnellan, Martin McNamara, Trevor Burke, Eddie Steede, Gerry Burke and Derek Reilly as good as any club player in the country.

Knockmore made the short tip from the shores of Lough Conn into Ballina on Saturday evening and went back home with a place in next Sunday’s senior football semi-final in their back pocket. Next time out they will be looking to put to bed the nightmare that was last years semi-final appearance when Ballintubber put nine in the back of their net at the last four stage.

There was a sense of an end of an era in Galway football circles in many regards last week when the news filtered through that former Galway football chairman Pat Egan had died following a long battle with illness.
