Local Fianna Fáil Deputy, Robert Troy, has called on the HSE to follow through on its long-standing commitment to develop a new ambulance base in Athlone.

Plans are in the pipeline to build a new 40 bed community nursing unit in Clifden. A planning application has been submitted by the HSE's Community Healthcare West (CHW) organisation to the Galway County Council regarding the proposed facility.

Clifden District Hospital will be closed from today (Thursday) until Sunday in order to allow staff to take time owed and/or take annual leave, the HSE said last night.

The withdrawal of the preferred bidder assigned to the construction of the proposed 50 bed community nursing unit at Clonbrusk has resulted in a further delay to the long awaited development.

Work has begun on the new €17 million Community Nursing Unit facility in Tuam, which will have 50 beds and a high dependency unit.

Local Minister of State, Deputy Peter Burke, has implored the HSE and South Westmeath Hospice committee to immediately engage in “meaningful and progressive” discussion to resolve outstanding issues pertaining to the relocation of palliative care beds from the existing St Vincent’s Care Centre to the new Community Nursing Unit at Clonbrusk.
