Lough Key Forest Park was the setting for another great performance by Mayo AC at Woodie’s DIY AAI Masters Cross Country Championships on Sunday. A mild misty day is usually welcomed by athletes, but many struggled in the tough conditions over hill and hollow.
Last Sunday at the Woodie’s DIY Masters Indoor Championships, Mayo AC came home with number of medals split between two athletes. In the female over 45 section, Ann Murray won a gold medal in the 3,000 metres and a bronze in the 400 metres. In the men’s over 55 section, Patrick Moran won the gold in the high jump event and took a bronze in the long jump.
The Mayo AC ladies team were on top form at the 25th European Club Road Race Cup in Almeirim in Portugal at the weekend. The four member team recorded exceptionally good times for the 15 kilometre race held on a flat course but in very warm summer-like conditions, with temperatures reaching 25 degrees.
A large number of members from Mayo AC are getting ready to take on the challenge of the 2011 Dublin Marathon on Monday morning. Almost half of those who are taking part have come into running through the Mayo Fit4Life scheme in Claremorris, Ballinrobe and Castlebar. The women’s senior team consists of Ann McDonnell, Maggie Heneghan, Kathy Connolly, Patricia Gallagher, Paula Prendergast and Yvonne Byrne. The women’s o-40 team is made up of Gwen Daly, Anne Fahy Ronayne, Pauline Joyce, Mary Walsh, Chris Gallagher and Mary Murphy. The senior men’s team is Damien Glacken, Brendan Harrison, Gerry Corley and John Byrne, while the o-50 side consists of Brian Cusack, John Timothy, Jimmy Feeney, Billy Gallagher, Owen Mongan, Chris O’Connell and Tom Hunt.
Ballyhaunis was blessed with welcome September sun on Saturday afternoon for the fourth annual 8k and final race in 2011 Mayo AC C&C Cellular Road League. Race organiser Martin Fitzmaurice and team put on an excellent, well-marshalled event.
The sixth race in Mayo AC's C&C Cellular 2011 Road League is at Claremorris on Saturday August 27 at 12 noon. As runners prepare to head to the Balla 10k this coming Saturday evening for what will be the fourth race in the 2011 Mayo AC C & C Cellular league details of the top 25 league positions after three races held have just been published. Timmy Glavey (Mayo AC) leads the mens’ league after three quality runs with 64 points closely followed by club mate Robert Malseed on 62pts having also run three races. While well positioned in joint third on 49pts having run two races each are Roger Barrett (Ballina AC) and Matt Bidwell (Galway City Harriers).
Conditions were good for the second annual Kilmovee 10k last Saturday afternoon. Some said it was very hot, but nobody among the record turnout of runners and walkers — 335 finishers — was really complaining. There were entries from 16 counties also. This year the event was the first race in the 2011 Mayo AC C&C Cellular
