Ballina county councillors may not take up LIS funding

The members of the Ballina Electoral Area Committee will meet next week to work out the road works plan for the area with senior engineers from Mayo County Council. At Wednesday’s monthly meeting of the committee the idea was mooted that the individual councillors would not take up the potential €7,000 that can be allocated to Local Improvement Scheme (LIS) works on private roads and they would put the money back into public road works budget.

HSE West members call for relaxation of smoking ban

A relaxation of the smoking ban in the grounds of Merlin Park Hospital in Galway has been agreed by members of HSE West following a call by chairman, Fine Gael Councillor Padraic Conneely, for more flexibility on the issue. At its May meeting this week councillors agreed that a designated area should be set aside for smokers, in place of the current protocol that obliges people to walk up to half a mile to a blue line at the hospital entrance.

Councillors look for more transparency from SPCs

A motion has been issued by Fine Gael councillor Patsy O’Brien calling for more transparency on decisions made by strategic policy committees. Cllr O’Brien’s motion called for all decisions made at SPC level to be made an agenda item at the main council meeting each month.
