Up to 200 jobs are to be lost at Baxter in Castlebar after staff at the plant were called to a meeting on Wednesday where they were informed that 150 redundancies would be sought from the 1,100 permanent employees while 50 temporary positions are also to be cut at the plant.

Members of staff at Mayo General Hospital were informed this week that their working hours were being cut — some by as much as half. Cllr Michael Kilcoyne has condemned the cutbacks, claiming his sources have confirmed that there will be a total reduction of 80 beds at the hospital by year end, despite the HSE saying the figure will be around 30 beds.

Mayor of Castlebar Michael Kilcoyne has welcomed the Government ban this week of substances on sale as ‘legal highs’ in headshops. Cllr Kilcoyne and his colleagues on Castlebar Town Council led a protest march earlier this year against the two head shops in town calling for them to be closed. “I welcome the ban, but my big question is why did it take so long? When this was raised first we were told it had to go through Government approval, then to the EU which we told the Government was rubbish. But the fact that these substances have been banned has to be welcomed as it’s a start.”

Independent Castlebar town councillor Michael Kilcoyne is staying Independent for now, but he is willing to talk to the Labour party if they come to him. The former Labour party councillor spilt with the party before the last local elections over candidate selection issues. Speaking to the Mayo Advertiser this week Cllr Kilcoyne said: “Well as of now, I’m staying independent. If Labour want to talk to me I will talk to them. I have no problem talking to Eamon Gilmore and he knows this.”

Castlebar Town Councillors criticised the revolving door of superintendents that have been stationed in the county town over the past number of years. Fianna Fáil Cllr Aidan Crowley informed the meeting that Supt Eugene Brennan ,who had been stationed in Castlebar for the past year and half, was transferred to Ardee, Co Louth on December 30 last.

Speaking at the launch of the Mandate trade union campaign entitled ‘Respect Retail Workers’ in the TF Royal Hotel the vice chairman of the Consumers’ Association of Ireland, Castlebar councillor Michael Kilcoyne, said how pleased he was to be asked to launch the campaign. New figures released by the Central Statistics Office this week reveal that unemployment levels continue to rise. There has been a massive 95 per cent increase in the number of people claiming unemployment assistance on the same period last year. Currently, nationally, there are a staggering 388,600 people claiming assistance, up from 188,800 on the corresponding period last year. This means that the unemployment rate has more than doubled from 5.5 per cent this time last year to 11.4 per cent at present.

Newly elected Mayor of Castlebar, Independent councillor Michael Kilcoyne, has accused the Health Service Executive of “telling lies” in relation to a vast reduction in hours being allocated for cleaning services at Mayo General Hospital. According to Cllr Kilcoyne, who is also the vice chairman of the Consumer Association of Ireland, he has been contacted by ISS contract cleaning staff at the hospital who have been informed that their hours are to be cut by 12.5 per cent; some 72 hours in total a week. After the HSE refuted these allegations, Cllr Kilcoyne is calling on the health authority to “be honest”.

A new pay and display system will start to operate in the Dunnes Stores car park, Castlebar over the coming weeks. This new system will see barrier free pay and display parking operating in the car park similar to the one in use already in the other council owned car parks.
