It is hardly surprising that statistics from Met Éireann show that Mayo has had a dismal summer, in fact it had recorded the highest level of rainfall in the country for July as well as the having the lowest level of sunshine.

Only a quarter of the normal monthly rainfall fell in Mayo in June, making it the driest June in half a century.

The Environmental Protection Agency has launched a report that projects significant changes to Mayo’s climate over this century. Mayo, along with other Connacht counties, will see this increase in winter rainfall. Over the next number of years it is estimated that winter rainfall in Connacht will increase by up to 10 per cent.
