Galway is gearing up for its big weekend of motor rallying when the annual Colm Quinn BMW Galway International Rally gets under way tomorrow.

Circuit of Ireland Rally organisers have announced that Westport man and well known rally official Tom Walsh, will take over the role of clerk of course for the 2015 event. Andy Gilmore, who managed the 2014 rally has had to give up the role due to his work commitments.

Preparations are well advanced for the Colm Quinn BMW Galway International Rally which will take place over the weekend of Feb 7 to Feb 9 and comprising the opening round of the 2014 Clonakilty Blackpudding Irish Tarmac Rally Championship.

The Galway Summer Rally will be based in Ballinasloe this year, following the announcement that The Carlton Shearwater Hotel, Ballinasloe, in association with Ballinasloe Town, will be the new title sponsors of the 2013 event.

The 2012 Irish Motorsport season kicks off in earnest this weekend with the running of the opening round of the Irish Tarmac Championship, the Safety Direct Galway International Rally. In a new departure for the traditional two-day event, the 2012 rally will take place over one day only, with 10 stages scheduled for Sunday February 5. A special spectator stage on the Dyke Road in Galway city will open proceedings, with competitors then heading north to the Headford region for three additional tests, each run three times, before returning to Galway for the finish in Eyre Square on Sunday evening.
