A Claremorris councillor has called on Mayo County Council to enter into “immediate negotiations” with Iarnrod Eireann to have a dangerous level crossing on the Claremorris/Kiltimagh Road widened and upgraded.

Claremorris councillor Tom Connolly has welcomed the announcement that funding of €50,000 has been allocated for the completion of the Parks road in Mayo Abbey – work will start in the coming months.

Awareness of green issues is low

At a recent Fianna Fáil meeting in Claremorris Councillor Pat McHugh stated that Claremorris is in a good position to face difficult times.

“Law and order is on the verge of breaking down in the county,” according to Swinford councillor Joe Mellett, while Belmullet councillor Gerry Coyle said that “thugs should be put behind bars”. These were just some of the indignant comments made by councillors at Monday afternoon’s county council meeting after a motion was put forward by Fine Gael councillor Michael Burke for the council to call on the Minister for Justice to provide more gardaí in Mayo, to fight the ongoing crime and anti social behaviour.
