Sunday’s Cusack Park Westmeath Senior Football decider between Garrycastle and Mullingar Shamrocks promises to be a fascinating affair.

Disappointment and dismay were the order of the day as Westmeath hurlers and footballers both tasted their last bit of action in this year’s all-Ireland championships last Saturday. Whatever about our hurlers who were punching above their weight, general expectation was that our footballers would have enough in the tank to be included in the draw for the next round of the qualifiers which took place last Monday morning.

Cusack Park plays host to an attractive double-header this Saturday with our footballers in action against Fermanagh at 3pm in round one of the All-Ireland SFC qualifiers followed by the meeting of Westmeath and Waterford in the hurling qualifiers.

All roads lead to Croke Park this Sunday as Westmeath square up to Derry in the division 2 league final at 2pm. Dublin take on Tyrone in the division 1 final at 4pm but Lake County supporters will be hoping to be celebrating a fourth division 2 title at that stage.

Westmeath make the long and difficult trip to Celtic Park, Derry this Sunday safe in the knowledge that losing their unbeaten tag is about all that is at stake. With promotion secured and given that it is very likely the same teams that will be contesting the division 2 final on April 28 it is not surprising that Pat Flanagan has opted to rest many of his regulars.

Westmeath footballers take to the road on Sunday bidding to make it three wins out of three in a game fixed for Tuam Stadium with a 2pm throw-in. Pat Flanagan’s men have made the perfect start to their league campaign bagging four valuable league points, but there is nothing easy in any of the remaining games.

he Mayo hurlers caused one of the shocks of the year on Saturday last in Westport GAA Grounds, as they dumped early season favourites Westmeath out of the Christy Ring Cup for 2009. Westmeath came into the tie as 1/7 on favourites, but the bookies got it all wrong as Mayo kept their championship aspirations alive thanks to a dogged display of power and skill.
