Wild West shoot-out expected in West Mayo

There’s no area in Mayo that can be easily called as to where the seats will be divided out in next week’s local elections, but the new West Mayo area is probably the hardest. The re-drawing of the boundaries last year has seen the old Westport and Belmullet areas thrown together into one giant swathe of land that stretches right from the northern tip of the county right down the west coast to the Galway border. Currently there are eight councillors sitting in the two areas and this time out there are only seven seats up for grabs in the new giant district.

Councillor Myles Staunton made a proposal at the Westport Joint Policing Committee meeting this week that a provision should be put in the Anti-Social policy document which will enable the “immediate expulsion from local authority housing” of anyone who lives in social housing and who allows someone who is involved in anti-social behaviour to stay with them.

Westport councillors condemn town council abolition

The impending abolition of the town councils was discussed by the Westport councillors at last week’s annual budget meeting. Cllr Christy Hyland first raised the issue by saying: “Westport is a good example of a town council and now people will have to go over to the new municipal authority with cap in hand like Oliver, asking please sir can I have more?”
